On March 7, 2025, all Senior Six learners from IFAK Don Bosco, under the guidance of General Studies and Communication Skills (GSCS) teacher Fidèle Mutarambirwa and Fratri Adrien Iradukunda, paid an educational field visit to Kigali Genocide Memorial. This visit aimed to enhance their understanding of the history of genocide, as required in the GSCS course.
General Studies and Communication Skills is a crosscutting subject delivered to all advanced-level secondary students. It covers a wide range of topics, including genocide, which is studied in Senior Six. To provide students with a deeper and more practical understanding of this topic, IFAK Don Bosco organized this visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial in Gisozi.
The Kigali Genocide Memorial is a place of remembrance and learning dedicated to the victims of the Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. It offers a powerful experience for visitors, promoting reconciliation and building peace through education.
During the visit, students were introduced to the historical background of the memorial. They explored different sections of the site, including: Covered and open graves where victims are laid to rest, Gardens, each carrying a unique contextual significance.
There is also detailed historical exhibitions explaining how the genocide was planned, executed, and ultimately stopped by the Rwanda Patriotic Army (RPA)
Additionally, the students learned about other genocides that have occurred worldwide, broadening their perspective on the consequences of hatred and division.
Teacher Fidèle Mutarambirwa praised the students for their discipline and engagement during the visit. He also acknowledged the leaders of IFAK Don Bosco for their continuous support in enabling both teachers and students to fulfill their educational responsibilities.
Students expressed their gratitude to the school for organizing such an impactful visit, emphasizing how it deepened their understanding of genocide beyond classroom lessons. They also appreciated Teacher Mutarambirwa for his efforts in connecting theoretical lessons with real-life experiences, making learning more meaningful.
Furthermore, the students extended their thanks to the government of Rwanda for its commitment to educating the youth and fighting against genocidal ideology.
The educational visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial provided IFAK Senior Six students with a profound learning experience, reinforcing the importance of remembrance, peace, and unity. Through this initiative, the school continues to play a crucial role in shaping responsible and informed citizens who are committed to promoting peace and fighting against genocide ideology.
